Indian Food Palooza: Chaat Masala Popcorn

I was so excited when I discovered that one of my favorite Indian Food Blogggers, Prerna of Indian Simmer, announced that she and two other food bloggers (Kathy and Barbara) were going to hold an Indian food blogging contest called Indian Food Palooza!  It's been over a year and half since I first had the idea of starting an Indian food blog.  As you can probably tell from the only entry on this blog, I've been pretty busy with my other blogs (Fashionably Bombed and DJ Kathbombay).  Needless to say, the Indian Food Palooza was just the kick in the butt I needed to get me blogging about Indian food again!

My entry is ridiculously simple to make, especially if you use microwave popcorn!  The most difficult part would be finding an Indian Grocery store to purchase Chaat Masala, if you don't already have it.  As you can see from the video below, I LOVVVVVE Chaat Masala!  It's basically a bunch of Indian spices (Mainly Dried Mango Powder (Amchoor), Black Salt (Kala Namak), Cumin, Dried Ginger, Asafoetida (Hing), etc.) combined with salt.  I choose to make Chaat Masala Popcorn because it brings back many fond memories of watching Bollywood films with my friends when I lived in Jaipur!  These days I make it all the time and for some reason it's even tastier when you sneak it into the movie theater ;)  I also like to sneak in my homemade Chai, but I'll save that for another entry!

Chaat Masala Popcorn:

1-2 Tablespoons Chaat Masala (I use MDH brand)
1 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil
1 Bag Popped Microwave Popcorn

Drizzle oil evenly over popped popcorn and shake in the bag.  Sprinkle Chaat Masala and shake bag well.  Now don't forget to hid it in a large purse when you're sneaking it into the theater!

PS- As you can tell from the first picture, this entry was intended to be a "Fusion Friday" entry, but I missed by one day!

  1. Hello! I make pop corns sprinkled with chaat masala. The air popped ones are light and of low calorie.

  2. I love popcorn but never added char masala to it. I must try it soon.
